SOLD-Borwicks Windermere Ltd. lake boat, circa 1930′s or 40′s, for sale by the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center. Boat is in good condition, but to be usable it will need a strake repaired. If you choose, repairs or restoration can be done by the Spaulding Boatworks. Boat has one rowing seat and one aft seat suitable for cushions.
This boat is a traditional design, specifically for Windermere, England’s largest lake. Windermere is located in the region of Cumbria, in England’s famous Lake District. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets, as well as Beatrix Potter.
Borwicks was based in a series of boathouses on Windermere. Borwicks built boats from the 1840′s until 30 years ago. Their boats were made in the hundreds for fishing and for hire on the lake, mainly of Lakeland Larch for 2 or 4 oars, occassionally larger for 6 oars. They had “pinned rollocks” and were therefore easy for beginners to row.
