I am looking for someone who builds wooden sailboats.
My father started building his 60 ft wooden sailboat years ago.
He put his boat building on hold to raise myself and my two siblings.
Now that he has aged and no longer has the funds to finish building the boat I want to help him find someone who wants to buy the boat and finish his dream.
I have attached some pictures of my father’s boat.
The boat is housed in a building my Dad built.
The front and possibly the side of the building would need to be removed to get the boat out of it.
The boat is a top sea schooner
The deck line of the boat is 60ft
The beam of the boat is 16ft
The height of the boat is 12ft
The keel of the boat is 3ft and is 5 tonne cement
The frame ribs are 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 laminated fir
The planking is yellow cedar and is stacked in the building.
We are looking to sell the boat and have it removed from the land in North Vancouver as soon as possible.

1941 Knud Reimers 8meter “Marita”

She was designed and built by Knud Reimers at the Hästholm Boatyard near Stockholm in 1941 as Hull #1 of the 40sqmeter Seefahrtskreuzer class. Then changed by the same owner and designer to hull #2 of the Swedish Ö8 eight-meter class.
Her plans are in the maritime museum in stockholm andI have a copy of them as well as a history of owners from 1941 until now.
Her composite construction makes her a swift racer but has also presented the main problem through corrosion. mahagony on oak and steel. most oak frames sistered in 2004. douglas fir decks, no interior. needs new floors, dealing with corroded steel frames, new boom, mast repair, engine, sternpost and rudder.
This is a restoration project for a classic yacht lover who either knows a lot about boatbuilding or can afford at least ca. 70,000 to pay for the restoration (labor and material).
She is located on dry land in Sausalito.
I have done a lot of work on her, but am unable to continue and would love to see her go into caring hands. i.e.: for free!

Reina Moana, 2004 40ft Gene Wells classic sloop for sale – $20,000

Reina Moana was hand built by Gene Wells on Kauai, Hawaii and is his last boat.

The boat is 40ft, 7′2″, and draws 6 ft with a lead keel and small lead wing. She has been little used. She has a 17 hp Yanmar, with approx 50 hours on it, sail are in good condition, forward looking sonar, porta potty, sleep 4, 15 gals water, and diesel. She is extremely fast, and has been recorded at 13.4 knots on reefed main and genoa. She sails easily at 7-10 knots and can be singled handed easily. Gene put approx 160K of material in her, including hand carved knees for the deck, sika spruce, much mahogany, and cedar, fir. Unfortunately she is fiberglass sheathed and is delaminating. I am now 69 and don’t have the will for a restoration project.

Reina Moana is seriously for sale FOB Hawaii for $20,000, less than the salvage value of her machinery, mast etc.

Searching for wooden boats “Wings” “Eolo” and “Bernice”

I am searching for three boats that were formerly owned by my husband and/or my husband and myself. I would just like to know that they are OK, and have good homes.

1) Wings
Wings was owned by my husband, W. John McCormick of Honolulu, from the late 1970s until the mid-1980s when I think we put her into my name. Angleman ketch, 39 or 40 ft. I think the model is Sea Spirit. The boat’s previous name: Maria. When named Maria, she was owned by (Tim?) Gold on Maui. We sold Wings in 1990 to Don Rose in Honolulu.

2) Eolo
Eolo was owned by W. John McComick of Honolulu during most of the 1970s, before I knew him. I feel sure she was a wooden boat. Tim Gold acquired Eolo in the late 1970s in a swap for Maria/Wings. I believe Eolo was a 65 ft schooner.

3) Bernice
Bernice was owned by W. John McCormick, then of Toronto, in (I’m guessing here) the 1950s and 1960s. A large wooden boat built in the early 1900s, I believe. He sailed her on and across Lake Ontario.

Authentic Herreshoff H-28 ketch reproduction using original blueprints. Project boat built by Stanley Sikorski in 1985. Hull, deck and cabin top completed. Atomic 4 motor, prop and shaft installed. Interior needs finishing. Hull is epoxy over 1 5/8″ strip plank mahogany on white oak frames. External one ton lead keel draws 3 1/2 feet. Gaff Rigged Cutter (Swiftsure)

The Swiftsure is a design from the John Welsford website (http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz).

Her specifics are as follows:

L.O.A. 16′ 5″
L.B.P. 14′ 9″
L.W.L 14′ 1″
Beam 4′ 7″
Sail Area 120 sf ft.

She is designed along the lines of an 18th century revenue cutter. Since the plans did not stipulate the running rigging or the finishing out of the interior I made numerous innovations including a fife rail cat heads and belaying pin rails. I made all of the blocks out of oak. The interior is oak strip (8mmX50mm) rubbed with pin tar and varnished. The frames are hard rock maple approximately 21″ on center and the hull is marine plywood. I installed an electric trolling motor directly behind the keel and in front of the rudder. It is powered by two 12V Marine batteries installed under the seats on the port and starboard side.

1971 60′ Custom Pilothouse Ketch

This 60′ Palomba ketch is sadly for sale due to the owners unforseen health problems. It had a lot of work done to it over the last year including being hauled recently, still needs more work. 38′ George Buehler double ender cutter ‘Tzegunka’ for sale

30′ LOD George Buehler – ‘emily design, 38′ LOA , 5′ draft, 9′2” beam. with boomkin + bowsprit. Double ender full keel cutter, locally grown woods found in central to southern coastal Oregon. Built in Coos Bay, Oregon and launched in 1988. Wood includes; port orford cedar mostly, douglas fir, pacific yew, yellow cedar, + white oak.

Topsides + decking are cotton caulked. Decking laid douglas fir old growth with galvenized steel wood screw fastenings. Ceiling 1/2″ thick yellow cedar fastened down with steel nails. Concrete keel encased in case hardened steel with 1″ diameter galvinized steel bolts. Tractor tread steel pins inside to have more weight for volume + 1.5 ton of pig iron + lead ingots. More weight was added to provide more stability for the aluminum mast which is 7′ taller then the original wooden mast. Herringbone chime construction. Crude little boat with simple design but choice of wood is nice with traditional shape.

5′ 6″ head room in cabin, v birth has nice raised hatch, with wood vents + clear plastic as well back entry hatch. Coes not have a head. This raised hatch needs water protectors for big seas.

Has a westerbeke diesel, model M-40, 4 cyclinder with approx 1790 hours.

A nesting dingy to go over the v birth hatch out of plywood very light, with a sail. soft solar panels on cabin roof + roof of house over entry hatch with a morning star sunsaver-10 solar controller. 12 volt D.C. system + 110 Volt AC.

Boat is in Florence, OR. We can share expense to haul out + obtain survey at your expense, which would be confirmed by us as far as location, once we have received a payment with serious commitment of purchase. Once sale completed, you also can choose to keep on hard at this time to do work, once we have agreed upon a time schedule to remove our belongings. Work required + negotiations with present Port of Florence for live aboard + moorage, as well haul out yard stay once we confirm location, by you, will be at your choosing: cosmetic paint interior, exterior, add water protectors for hatch as previously stated for big seas, etc.

Restored Classic 30′ Sloop from Designer of Bluenose

Spirit is a 30 foot, cutter-rigged sloop from William J. Roue, who designed the historic Bluenose and its successor, Bluenose II. Built in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia in 1957 by Smith & Rhuland, she retains her original bronze fittings, and is so faithfully restored that sailing her is like time travel.
She has a full complement of sails, including two main, two jib and spinnaker. The jib boom is self-tacking for single handed sailing. Mast and booms are Sitka spruce. Freshly painted inside and out. Canvas cushions for forward and main cabin berths. Standing headroom.

A labor of love, wooden all hand made, full keel with classic lines. We have spent the past couple of years restoring the boat. The masts, have been refinished as well as all the blocks. Old line was removed and replaced with new line. All bronze fittings, hand made as well.

The engine is a Yanmar 2 banger raw water cooled. She has a 5 foot draft, shoe rudder, 1′ BRONZE shaft. Cutter bow, 110 instant hot water heater, 100 gallon fresh water tank. Hummingbird fish finder depth sounder. All hand tools all spare parts. New fabric on all cushions, new curtains.

The sails are in new condition. The raw water engine is in almost new condition. The boat has never been sailed.

Norwegian 14′ Rowing and Gaff Rig Sailing Skiff for Sale

Norwegian, 300 year-old design, 14 foot, rowing and sailing skiff called Rana. She is the last of the all wood, handmade skiffs made at the Rana Boat Works of Norway. She was imported here in the 1970’s and sold through the Whole Earth catalogue and store in Berkeley.

I found her treated poorly by her original owner. Since 1986 she has been in my garage, dry and well covered all the time. I have been told she is made of Norwegian Spruce. While there are small areas of dry rot and a few ribs should be replaced, she is still very sound. I have 95-98% all the parts including her production number stamped on a plaque. She is a gaff rigged sloop. I have the main and the jib sail and rowing oars 12′ long. She comes with the trailer.

I am asking $450 or best offer.

Canadian, Wooden Canoe (Refurbishment Project)

'Sioux' Canadian, Wooden Canoe (Circa 100 Years Old)

This item is a wooden canoe that I inherited from my father, (circa 15ft long by 3ft at the widest point), which I am led to believe was imported from Canada at the turn of the last century, (1905 is the date that I was told but I have no way of knowing whether that is correct – Im trying to contact the Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Canada to corroborate). My father bought it in Norwich in the 1950’s and christened it ‘Sioux.’

I don’t know what wood was used to make it but a friend believes that it might be cedar?

It was in the loft of a boathouse for 30 years where it dried out so much that it leaked. It was then transferred to a garage where it spent the next decade. I left it outside for the last 8 months and very recently (June 2009) floated it in the Thames for two weeks to see if the wood could be encouraged to swell/rehydrate but it hasn’t worked very well and some parts have got worse.

Needs a comprehensive refurbishment in my humble and inexpert opinion – which is where you might come in. It could become a thing of beauty once more given the right attention.

It’s pretty heavy so I’d advise that you would need a boat trailer to collect it, or two strong men and a robust roof-rack. I can barely lift it by myself.

I’m located in Thames Ditton, Surrey, England. There are lots of detailed photos showing the various areas that require attention so please email me if you would like me to send them to you.

Thomas Fleming Day, the founder and editor of “Rudder” magazine, saw the need for a seaworthy sailboat that could be built by an intelligent amateur. Fleming together with the designer C.D. Mower published in 1901 the plans as a gaff rigged centerboard yawl. In 1904 they re published the plans of their conversion of the boat to a full keel.

The Duchess was owner built as a Marconi in 1939-1940 at the San Pedro Boat Works. The Sea Bird hard chine stands up well to the winds and swells of S.F. Bay

SOLD-Borwicks Windermere Ltd. lake boat, circa 1930’s or 40’s, for sale by the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center. Boat is in good condition, but to be usable it will need a strake repaired. If you choose, repairs or restoration can be done by the Spaulding Boatworks. Boat has one rowing seat and one aft seat suitable for cushions.

This boat is a traditional design, specifically for Windermere, England’s largest lake. Windermere is located in the region of Cumbria, in England’s famous Lake District. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets, as well as Beatrix Potter.

Borwicks was based in a series of boathouses on Windermere. Borwicks built boats from the 1840’s until 30 years ago. Their boats were made in the hundreds for fishing and for hire on the lake, mainly of Lakeland Larch for 2 or 4 oars, occassionally larger for 6 oars. They had “pinned rollocks” and were therefore easy for beginners to row.

Length = 16′ Beam = 3′8″ Draft = 6″

Includes one set of oars.

Debit is more than just a boat. Its provenance and grace along with its impressive race record including the Transpac, the Los Angeles to Honolulu, and its stellar showing of the Class D top honors in the 1959 Honolulu race, puts this yacht into another category.

Along with her sistership Credit, owned by Bill Belmont, Debit was a star in her day and still shines brightly, today.

However, it is time to pass the torch to a new steward. Debit is currently berthed in Sausalito, California and is in good shape. Her brightwork was just completed, her decks repainted, and her chrome sparkles. Her cabin boasts a warm and inviting feel as does her tiller.

She comes with a complete set of sails, including Spinnaker and a full dodger.

Her Yanmar diesel is strong. Her mast is aluminum, and her rigging is in great shape.

20′x8′ barge houseboat design.

The hull is complete and the fore and aft decks are on.
The 2′x6′ runners are on and run from the bow to stern and are topped with 1/4″x2.5″ steel bar so the boat can take the ground safely.
The hull, sides, bow, and stern are all double 1/2″ plywood covered with two layers of glass cloth and epoxy.
The bottom has been painted with white two part epoxy paint.
Included are seventeen 4′x8′ sheets of 5-ply mahogany marine plywood to complete the cabin: 6 sheets of 1/2″, 4 sheets of 1/4″, and 7 sheets of 7/16″.
The trailer is custom built, heavy duty, dual axle.

This is not a flimsy homemade boat. Devlin is known for solid over-built wooden boat designs, and this is no exception. The hull is doubled 1/2″ ply, epoxy glued and sheathed in two layers of 7.5oz cloth & epoxy. The stern is reinforced with Kevlar cloth. This is where the outboard mount will hang and if mounted correctly, it isn’t falling off at an inopportune time!

90′ Alden designed schooner hull for sale

We have started the restoration of the 90′ iroko on oak wood hull of the 1939 built yacht for the automobile designer and builder Ettore Bugatti, but budgetary restraints force us to put the boat again up for sale. The hull has to be rebuilt in approx. 70% of framing and approx. 50% of planking. Some new materials are already in place. The hull was built in France according to designs based on a John G. Alden schooner, although Ettore Bugatti himself had designed a different rig and interior. This restoration would bring back to life one of the most extravagant and special classic yachts which you can ever imagine. There had been presented even a big number of special patents aimed at facilitating the sailing of this yacht.

The boat is located in Trinidad and Tobago, a very good source for teak for planking and interior joinery. Also qualified workers are at hand there. In regard to the price we are flexible. The important thing for us is to find someone really interested in taking over this fascinating project.

Built from scratch, according to designer Iain Oughtred’s plans and building instructions available from the Wooden Boat Company.

Owner is 86 years old and not able to complete work, and wishes to find someone to finish the boat.

“Skeleton” complete, with bottom attached. Faired and ready for application of strakes, except for final touches on inner stem and transom. Bulkheads fitted and in place.

Have marine plywood to complete lapstrakes and deck, and more than enough hardwood to fabricate interior parts, rudder and center board.

Boat rests on building frame, in Sonoma (plywood also there). Hardwood stored at owner’s residence in Walnut Creek. Owner will help interested boat-builder figure out how to get boat and materials to his work site.

1940’s 63′ San Diego water taxi VICTORY 1 for sale-PRICE REDUCED

The Victory 1 is an excellent example of a 1940’s bay water taxi. The interior space is an unobstructed 16′x38′ room under the original canopy from the 1940’s. This canopy has not been replaced and is one of the final projects that the new owner, according to his/her needs will be able to design and build.

The Victory 1 might be better termed a launch. It was licensed for 200 people coast wise, which is a lot of people to take out in a flat bottom boat on the ocean.

A Frenchman built it in 1943 at the San Pedro Boathouse. During that era, they built a lot of these boats for water taxis. It was employed by the H-10 Water Taxi Company in San Pedro Harbor, Los Angeles. Up until 1973 it was used in San Diego Harbor to run between the foot of Market Street and Coronado Island.

The Warden Johnston, historic 65′ 60 ton Alcatraz Penitentiary launch, for sale-PRICE REDUCED

The Warden Johnston used to be a familiar sight to the citizens of San Francisco, having made 12 trips per day to the City and back to Alcatraz Island Federal Penitentiary from 1945 to 1961, 144,000 total. She brought all the personnel, prisoners and families on the island almost everything they needed. All inmates from 1945 to 1961 were transported on and off the island via the Warden Johnston, including such prisoners as Machine Gun Kelly and Robert Stroud, aka The Birdman of Alcatraz. Warden Johnston even ferried children on the first leg of their daily journey to school.

In 1963, Alcatraz was closed as a federal prison. For the next 35 years, the Sea Scouts used the boat to teach seamanship to teens.

Seattle naval architect L.H. Coolidge, best known for his wooden tugs, designed this boat. The Warden Johnston was previously certified by the U.S. Coast Guard and licensed for 60 passengers. The 60-ton vessel, which carries 750 gallons of fuel and 500 of water, was built of Douglas fir frames and planks. It’s basically a small ferry built on a tugboat hull—which made it stable and durable. The boat made crossings even on days when the Golden Gate Bridge was closed because of high winds.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in 2001 naming the Warden Johnston “a historic San Francisco maritime asset.” The World Ship Trust in London has placed the Warden Johnston on its international register of historic vessels.

She has been out of commission for 3 years in wet storage at the K.K.M.I. boat yard in Richmond. They have just about completed a Spring overhaul with over $20,000 spent on the yacht. Designed by Ian Macgregor in 1937 built by Pacspar boatworks in SanPedro in 1947, Morningstar was nearly completely rebuilt by Berkeley Marine Center in the late 90’s including all new transom, rebuilt stem, new decks, all new house, several new planks, completely refastened, all new standing rigging, new stainless steel gas tank, and countless other small details. The former owner ran out of funds to complete the project and she was stored at Berkeley Marine Center for the next five or six years. In December of last year I took over the project, first swelling her back up and recaulking her, next came assembly of the rig and overhauling the Atomic four and reinstalling it. New sails were ordered from Pineapple Sails and Morninstar went for her first sail in many years in April of this year. I raced her in the annual Master Mariners Regatta in May and took second in her division.

I am currently reinstalling some of her interior and expect to have everything complete by early August. This is not a project boat however ther will be some things for her new caretaker to finish, she needs cushions and cabinet work in the main cabin completed, other than those items she is like new and shows well. Morningstar took honorable mention (second place) at the Woodenboat show at he Corinthian Yacht Club this year.

Asking price is $25,000, completion of cabinet work in main cabin can be negotiated if the new owner desires.

Sea Dawn is 36-feet in length and 11 feet in width and is of the husky seagoing type intended for service on deep waters but just as suitable for sailing on Long Island Sound, the Great Lakes or any similar bodies of water. THE 36-FOOTER SEA DAWN

The auxiliary ketch Sea Dawn, was designed by the well-known Boston designer, S. S. Crocker, Jr. who has specialized for many years in the design of yachts of the cruising type.

Sea Dawn is 36-feet in length and 11 feet in width and is of the husky seagoing type intended for service on deep waters but just as suitable for sailing on Long Island Sound, the Great Lakes or any similar bodies of water. We have heard a great deal about the seaworthiness of centerboard boats and we have received so many letters in this regard that we have no excuses to make for the use of the board in Sea Dawn. She is not an extreme shallow draft craft for there is a fairly deep keel with a good deal of drag which should be sufficient to permit her to go to windward in shoal water with a fair amount of success. In deeper waters the board can be sent down to provide the maximum lateral plane area.

The ketch rig was used for obvious reasons. For short-handed cruising there has never been a better rig. In a short squall the mainsail can be let go with a rush and there will still be canvas enough to keep way on the boat. The average yawl has so small a mizzen that she will do nothing but bob up and down in the sea if the mainsail is taken off. The total area of canvas is low but quite sufficient for a cruising boat where comfort is the watchword and the crew is not pleased with the idea of jumping about every few minutes shifting sails. If there is any one item which can utterly spoil a good hull it is over-canvasing. Sea Dawn is fitted with a gaff-headed rig. Without a doubt many readers will think that they prefer the jibheaded, or Marconi, rig. Those who insist upon making this change are referred to the designer who no doubt will be quite willing to design a new sail plan, at his regular fee for such work. From the standpoint of THE RUDDER staff we urgently advise you to stick to the gaff rig. If Sea Dawn was intended for afternoon racing we would suggest a marconi rig but for ordinary cruising there has never been a better rig than the one shown.

Below decks Sea Dawn is laid out to suit the desires of the average yachtsman. There are berths for four and a good toilet and galley. The latter is equipped with a sink, ice-box and one of the old-reliable Shipmate ranges. We believe that many owners of this fine boat will feel that four is a crowd, and not company, in a boat of this size. A suggestion for such folks would be to make the saloon berths a little longer and to add a great deal to the locker space.

Recent survey available from March, 2008. Upgrades and renovations since survey:

New main and jib boom cover in dark blue to match upholstery, wire lifelines, unstepped mast to varnish, reseam, and replaced main and topping lift sheaves. Installed new wire – rope main halyard, and installed new wind vane. New engine belt, fuel filter – fully inspected. Hauled boat to touch up bottom paint, replaced cutlass bearing, propeller stuffing box, leaking fasteners, recaulked and painted exposed planks. Varnished entire topside. Many small interior upgrades.

Additional work to be done before in perfect wooden boat magazine shape: touch up white corners for fiberglass, varnish under forward hatch, remove tape from under rails and possible repaint. Below water the hull is slightly paint sick and could probably use a new job next time it is hauled. Topside of haul is in better shape, but could also use some touching up. Aside from this and a little boat soap for the topside, the boat is in excellent condition.

Have been sailing her nearly every day in San Francisco. She is very sea worthy, and much quicker than anybody expects – with the lowest PHRF in the San Francisco Master Mariners group for ocean racers. She has treated me very well and I am disappointed to sell her, but as the financial market collapses, I must adapt. SOLD-Talofa is a gaff rigged 40′ LOA 30′ LOD wooden William Atkin-designed schooner with a square sail on a yard. She is a real classic sailboat for the purist.

Her hull is in good shape; fir on oak frames with a ceiling inside the ribs. She will need bottom paint while you have her out of the water for a survey (highly recommended). She’s powered by a new Yanmar 3GM diesel with 14 hours on it. Beautiful cabin with 2-burner propane stove, microwave, sink and refer. All original kerosene lamps, all bronze parts attached. Hand dipped galvanized fittings all in good shape. Spanish Brass crystal chandelier. Needs running rigging. All sails included and in good shape. Depth sounder and speedometer, VHF and small inverter included. Slip is available.

She was built in 1962 by Ern Farrington in the valley from William Atkin “Little Maid of Kent” plans and trucked to the sea. Sailed to South Pacific. Farrington’s wife became ill and he sold the boat when he returned to San Francisco. Talofa was in Sausalito for many years and was #13 Master Mariner.

Boat is berthed at Oyster Point Marina in South San Francisco.

I have this 33′ boat with twin 327 engines in the sac delta. I am (as near as I can tell) the third owner. She is in good condition with a clean out of the water survey in 2006. I know the prior owner died but would sure like to know who came before or any history on this model Chris Craft. I have taken helm seats out and they need new foam some wood replaced and covers. Has anyone any hints on doing this job?

CLOSED, DONATED-Polaris is a gaff rigged sloop 34′ on deck, 29′ on the waterline, and has a beam of 12′. She draws 4′6″ and has a sparred length of 42′. Polaris is carvel built (fir on oak) and has mast and spars of spruce. She was built in Oakland very early in the twentieth century. The builder is unknown. She is powered by a new YANMAR diesel engine (fewer than thirty hours on it). I am asking $22,000 for her. Much of that sum represents the cost of the new engine. Since I took over the custodianship, six years ago, I have installed a holding tank, an automatic bilge pump, and a teak table on gimbal rings. The mast and spars have all been stripped and varnished within the past year. Serious wooden boat fanciers, such as members of MMBA, know the responsibility and work of maintenance in a vessel the age of Polaris. I feel obliged to seek out the right sort of caretakers for this piece of San Francisco maritime history. Also willing to partner. D.W.Bressler. Located in Belvedere, California.
