Women and Woodworking

This very popular class is limited to six students and is now full, but we'll have another! If you are interested, please email We could schedule more Saturday classes, or if there is interest, evening or Sunday classes.

In this women-only class, you will learn shop safety, tool skills, measurement, design, construction, and finishing. Once you have these skills, they are yours for life, giving you the personal satisfaction and savings of completing simple woodworking and carpentry projects on your own. During the class you’ll be using the professional workshop at the Spaulding Marine Center, but you’ll learn about relatively-inexpensive hand and power tools you can use at home.

The coursework varies based on interests and experience. New students may build a toolbox, wooden mallet, paddle, or cutting board. No prior experience necessary. Tools and materials are provided. (For larger projects, students must supply the materials.)

Mélanie Lopez holds a Vocational Training Certificate in boatbuilding from the Poinso-Chapuis School in Marseille, and a Master of Industrial System Engineering from the University of Technology in Lille. She has been a marine carpenter and boatbuilder at the Spaulding Marine Center for one year.
