PRESERVATION

The Spaulding Wooden Boat Center is committed to the ongoing preservation of its most significant artifact — the historic Spaulding Boatworks. Called “A Cathedral to Wooden Boats” by the San Francisco Chronicle's Carl Nolte, the boatworks remains as it has been for over 50 years. Constructed by Myron Spaulding on the site of the WWII Liberty Ship building yard in Sausalito, the boatworks occupies an acre of waterfront property, and includes the tools, materials and plans that Myron used to establish his reputation as a master boat builder, yacht designer and racer.

An architectural icon on the Sausalito waterfront, the Spaulding Boatworks is the last remaining historic yard still in operation. An island of cultural significance in the midst of 21st century development, the boatworks is a reminder of the craftsmanship and self-reliance that characterized the boat building industry in the days when raw lumber was routinely transformed into functional works of art.
