SPAULDING 33
The Spaulding 33, a one–design auxiliary sloop class
The Spaulding 33 class is unique among boats of its size in that every one of the boats was built by its original owner. Myron Spaulding designed the Spaulding 33 after World War II to be built by the homebuilder, which was made possible by its simplicity of design incorporating cut frames and chine and plywood planking. Like all of Myron’s boats, the Spaulding 33 was good-looking, seaworthy and fast. They have proven extremely seaworthy on extensive off-shore races and cruises. Even in heavy weather there has been no necessity to shorten sail.
Spaulding 33's are excellent family boats with spacious cruising accommodations including 6 foot 2 inch headroom, 6 bunks, enclosed head, hanging locker, galley with stove, ice-box and sink. The capacity of 60 gallons of water and 60 gallons of gasoline for the auxiliary engine provides for a long cruising range.
Auroral
The Spaulding Wooden Boat Center is proud owner of the Spaulding 33, Auroral. Auroral was built by Ivan Davies in an old stable in San Francisco in the 1950's. Two other Spaulding 33's were being built in that stable at the same time, including our Pegasus.
Auroral was restored by Spaulding Boatworks staff member Jonah Ward and launched at the Spaulding Center on November 7, 2009.
Pegasus
The Spaulding Center received Pegasus as a donation from Ruth Schnapp in 2008. Ruth's husband, Michael, built Pegasus in 1962 in San Francisco, one of thirteen built. Ever since, the boat has been sailed and loved by the entire Schnapp family.
Pegasus will get good use at SWBC on cruises for our youth and senior groups.
