Furniture MakerBACK TO TOP

Title: Furniture Maker
Reports to: Boatworks Manager

General Responsibilities:
To design and build a mahogany bookshelf (approximately 4ft by 7ft) to house a nautical book collection that has been donated to SWBC.

Skills Needed:
• Skilled furniture maker who can work independently on a project through to completion

Desired Attributes:
• Have a good appreciation of design, construction and materials
• Possess good practical skills and enjoy using your hands
• Be able to work with minimal supervision

DocentBACK TO TOP

Title: Docent
Reports to: Program Manager

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Give guided tours of SWBC
• Be knowledgeable about and provide a brief history of SWBC, an explanation of the center's programs, a tour of current exhibits (Freda) and state future plans and goals
• Work with the Program Manager in developing relationships with external bodies, such as schools and local community groups and set up tours of the center

Skills Needed:
• Outgoing and comfortable welcoming/managing visitors
• Articulate with good public speaking skills
• Interest in maritime and /or Sausalito history
• Interest in boats and sailing
• Ability to climb up and down stairs

Desired Attributes:
• Eager to learn and communicate knowledge to others
• Sense of discretion when conducting tours to limit disturbance to boat work operations
• Previous experience in education and teaching or being a docent desired but not essential
• Available to do occasional weekend tours

Audiovisual TechnicianBACK TO TOP

Title: Audiovisual Technician
Reports to: Program Manager

General Responsibilities:
Performs production work assisting SWBC staff with the design, production and preparation of audiovisual materials. Sets up and operates audiovisual equipment at SWBC lectures, promotional events and possibly docent training sessions.

Skills Needed:
• Familiarity with audiovisual techniques related to multimedia production activities including audio, video and photography
• Skill in operating and maintaining audiovisual equipment
• Ability to prepare and duplicate audiovisual material for presentations and public information
• Ability to organize and prepare slide presentations as required
• Knowledge of PowerPoint useful

Desired Attributes:
• Qualification in or experience in audiovisual techniques
• Good organisational skills
• Ability to work independently or part of a team
• A creative eye that enjoys utilizing images and sounds to produce professional presentations to enhance SWBC’s mission

Office AssistantBACK TO TOP

Title: Office Assistant
Reports to: Program Manager

General Responsibilities:
Provide basic administrative support to the Program Manager and Executive Director.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Typing general correspondence
• Communications – sending faxes and e-mails, answering or making telephone calls
• Assisting in the creation of membership flyers, newsletters and promotional materials
• Data entry into SWBC’s office database, Pledgeware
• Organizing filing and photocopying
• Assisting with mailings
• Helping organize SWBC events throughout the year

Skills Needed:
• Good IT skills, such as use of Microsoft packages, e-mail and the Internet
• Good written and verbal skills
• The ability to work independently or part of a team
• Organized
• Able to take ideas and develop them independently
• Attention to detail

Desired Attributes:
• Previous office experience preferred but not essential
• Outgoing
• Discrete
• Flexible

Archivist/ConservationistBACK TO TOP

Title: Archivist/Conservationist
Reports to: Executive Director

General Responsibilities:
Archive written materials at SWBC pertaining to boats, the building and Myron Spaulding. Record oral histories of interest when the opportunity arises.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Evaluating materials for preservation and retention
• Conserving historical documents and artefacts
• Devising record-keeping systems
• Cataloguing collections and managing information and materials
• As SWBC develops, possibly arranging exhibitions, talks, visits and teaching materials

Skills Needed:
• A genuine interest in history and in preserving records for posterity
• A willingness to learn more about maritime history and Sausalito’s history
• An interest and knowledge of boats and sailing helpful
• Good communication skills—must be able to relate to all sorts of people
• A logical approach to the work of identification and classification
• Good organizational ability to manage a wide range of tasks
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• The ability to skim and understand an extensive and varied range of materials
• Competence in administrative procedures and project management ability

Desired Attributes:
• Previous experience in archiving and documenting oral histories desired but not essential
• Interest in ephemera
