"My little brother, Christopher and I really enjoyed the wood working class at SWBC. I was amazed out how focused and engaged Christopher and the other kids were in their wood building projects. During one of the 4 hour classes we only took a ten minute break and before the ten minutes were up Christopher wanted to go back in and work on his project. ( A wooden tool box) In my opinion, SWBC provided a wonderful activity for all the kids who participated and also in my opinion, the way in which all kids should be spending some of their time. The activity teaches them skills, using tools, safety, pride, confidence, working together, the value of work, following directions, and the appreciation that comes from making something with one's own hands. Christopher and I look forward to participating in the wooden boat building activity.
Thank you, Ed Worth, Big Brother of the Year 2008."

A note from Ed:<br

After class she proudly said the project was “easy” and I could see the boost in her confidence. I think this project will be memorable for years to come and build some pride (and knowledge) she can brag about down the road. Can’t wait to attend this Saturday.Cheers to you and all the helpful folks,Holly Mahan

Although Destiny and I have attended on one class thus far, Destiny absolutely loved it. Things I hadn't considered that were a challenge for some boys:
1. It's not easy to visualize or to transfer an image from a 2-dimensional piece of paper to a 3-dimensional piece of wood.
2. It's not easy to manage a right angle square so that the edge stays tight against the wood the whole time you are drawing a line.
3. It's not easy to stay focused on a piece of wood when there's so much social activity to be seen going on.I was sure to remind Edwin that everyone who is expert at a particular skill started at the exact same uncomfortable place. You have to go through the unfamiliar part until it becomes routine. Thanks to Craig and Mark and everyone for giving these kids exposure to skills -- and ultimately thrills -- that only a handful of their peers will ever experience.Bruce

What a great time we had at class #1!

It was an eye-opener for me to watch Edwin work with the tools to transfer over measurements from the plans to the wood.
