Hold Fast! The Art and Evolution of Freda's Rig - October 19th

$0.00

Saturday, October 19th, 2025

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Step aboard the oldest sailing yacht on the West Coast and get an up-close look at what it takes to keep her sailing through the centuries.

Join Courtney J. Andersen, master rigger for traditionally rigged vessels, and maritime historian, for a special seminar using Freda as a living case study. Freshly re-rigged under Courtney’s expertise, Freda offers the perfect backdrop to explore over a century of sailing tradition—and the craftsmanship it takes to preserve it.

In this lecture, Courtney will share:

  • A brief history of Freda’s rig, including major changes over the years

  • The decision-making behind her most recent re-rig

  • Traditional and modern materials, methods, and rigging techniques

  • What it actually takes to restore and maintain a classic wooden rig

Whether you're a sailor, boatbuilder, or maritime history buff, this session is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the country’s few full-time traditional riggers—right beside the vessel he just renewed.

*This event is free to the public. RSVP required. Seating is limited.

About the Instructor

Courtney J. Andersen is a master rigger, maritime historian, and longtime educator with over 35 years of experience working aloft on traditional sailing vessels—from square-riggers and museum ships to gaff sloops like Freda. Known for his deep knowledge, approachable teaching style, and infectious passion for heritage craft, Courtney has restored and rigged some of the most iconic vessels in the U.S., Canada, the UK and Polynesia - including vessels from the Pirates of the Caribbean, Chief of War, and Our Flag Means Death. His work blends historical accuracy with modern safety standards, helping keep classic boats sailing strong—and their stories alive. Learn more about Courtney and his work on his website.

This lecture is your entry point to a deeper rigging education.

In January, Courtney will return to teach a comprehensive 5-part rigging course at Spaulding—designed for sailors, boat owners, and maritime enthusiasts who want to understand, inspect, and maintain traditional and modern rigs alike. From the evolution of materials to hands-on splicing, rig inspections, and classic upkeep methods, the series will give you the skills (and confidence) to work on your own boat—or deepen your knowledge as a mariner.
