Spaulding Marine Center offers semester long sessions for home school students to participate in sailing and woodworking during the school year.* Sessions meet on Wednesdays at the Spaulding Marine Center from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Our Spring 2026 Session will begin on TBD and will meet consecutively for 13-weeks until TBD (excluding Holidays).

Program Description: 

The Homeschool Program at Spaulding Marine Center is designed for students, age 10 to 16 years old, interested in learning about sailing, maritime history, woodworking, ecology and science. The main goals of the program are to create a learning environment where students can learn at their own pace and become immersed in exploring, building and creating. Students will connect with each other in a maritime and ecology-rich setting.

Sailing Curriculum:

The Sailing Curriculum for the Spaulding Homeschool Program on SF Bay Pelicans introduces students to the basics of sailing, focusing on safety, boat handling, and seamanship. Students will learn to rig and de-rig boats, understand wind patterns, and master fundamental sailing maneuvers. Practical lessons on the water include steering, tacking, jibing, and docking. The program emphasizes teamwork, communication, and respect for the marine environment, providing a comprehensive foundation in sailing on the San Francisco Bay.

Woodworking Curriculum:

The Woodshop Curriculum for the Homeschool Program 2025/26 includes comprehensive lessons on shop safety, tool handling, machine using, project planning, and craftsmanship. Students receive training on the bandsaw, drill press, and round belt sander, along with hand tool skills like marking, sawing, and chiseling. They will begin the first semester completing two main projects: a box and a cutting board, involving design selection, material preparation, and various construction techniques. After these projects, students are encouraged to create their own design projects, applying their skills creatively.

Environmental and Science Curriculum: 

The Environmental Stewardship and Science Curriculum includes a comprehensive exploration of local ecology, weather understanding, watershed science, wind science, and pollution prevention through beach clean-ups. Students will study local ecosystems, learn to interpret weather patterns, and understand watershed dynamics and wind behavior. The program also includes hands-on beach clean-ups to prevent pollution and practical lessons in marine biology, fostering a deep respect for the environment and empowering students to become active stewards of their surroundings.

Local Field Trips:

Students will enhance their learning through field trips to the Dolphin Swimming and Boating Foundation, the National Maritime Museum, and more. Students will also get the opportunity to sail on larger vessels such as race boats and Spaulding’s historic flagship Freda, the oldest sailboat on the West Coast.
