Inspiring and Teaching a New Generation of Sailors

By Kevin Roesler - May 21st, 2025

In my mid-20s, my Dad and I taught ourselves how to sail on a 13-foot sailboat on a small lake in the Chicago suburbs. It was the start of a lifelong passion for sailing. Fast forward to 2012, 20-plus years and three boats later, my wife and I moved to Tiburon. We joined the Corinthian Yacht Club and became involved by serving on various committees, the board of directors, and eventually as part of the Flag. Over the years, I’ve had wonderful opportunities to connect with an inspiring community of sailors and boat lovers who share my passion for life on the water.

A fellow CYC member who had volunteered with Spaulding Marine Center asked if I knew anyone who might be interested in being a volunteer youth sailing instructor with their home-schooled youth sailing program. I paused momentarily, smiled, and said, “Yes, I do. Me.” I’d long admired Spaulding’s mission to preserve maritime traditions and foster hands-on learning for all ages, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give back and inspire a new generation of sailors.

Volunteering at Spaulding has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my sailing life. Working with young sailors, many of whom are stepping onto a boat for the first time, has given me a fresh perspective on a sport that I’ve loved for decades. From learning to rig a boat to mastering their first tack, I get to witness a remarkable transformation as these young sailors gain confidence, a sense of responsibility, and resilience—all while having an unforgettable time out on the Bay. This experience has deepened my sense of purpose within the sailing community. Mentoring at Spaulding has challenged me to grow as an instructor, a sailor, and a human being.

Looking back, I’m grateful that I said “Yes.” Volunteering at Spaulding has not only allowed me to share what I love but has also reminded me why I love it. Watching young sailors catch the wind and successfully tack the boat for the first time, and knowing that I played a small part in that moment, is something I’ll carry with me forever.

Youth Education Programs like these are run in large part because of our generous community of donors and volunteers.

We encourage you to make a donation to our Educational Program Fund, and appreciate all your support!
