Always wanted to build a boat but didn't know where to start? WoodenBoat School is bringing its popular beginner course to the West Coast, hosted at Spaulding Marine Center in Sausalito. Over five days, you'll build a traditional flat-bottom skiff called the Susan Skiff and learn the core skills of wooden boatbuilding along the way.
Michael Gorman, Director of WoodenBoat School and an experienced boatbuilder, leads the course. You'll work through the full process through hands-on work and demonstrations:
Reading boat plans and lofting
Scarfing, framing, and planking
Interior joinerwork
Using hand and power tools safely
Michael will also discuss how to choose a good design for a first-time builder and how to set up a one-person home workshop.
No experience needed. This class is designed for complete beginners. Expect moderate physical activity, including standing for long periods, planing, sanding, and group work.
Tuition: $950 · Materials: $100
Registration is now open through WoodenBoat School. Their courses fill quickly, so sign up early to reserve your spot.
